Overview of Everest Base Camp trek with Lobuche East Peak Climbing

If you dream of your first six-thousand-meter high Himalaya in Nepal and have long wanted to try high-altitude mountaineering, you can’t imagine a more ideal option than our Everest Base Camp trek with Lobuche East Peak climbing expedition.

You reach the top, look around at the huge space, experience the wave-like ecstasy and infinite tranquility and you feel you are in the clouds. This feeling exactly is what you will get from start to finish in our 14-day Everest Base Camp trek with Lobuche East Peak Climbing trip.

The beautiful Lobuche Peak stands proudly in the charming Lobuche Village of the Khumbu region. It has two majestic Peaks to conquer – Lobuche East at 6119 m (which we will be conquering) and Lobuche West at 6145 m.

The iconic April 25, 1984 date became a significant milestone when Laurence Nielson and Ang Gyalzen Sherpa, members of a New Zealand expedition became the first to conquer Lobuche East Peak.

Since then, the Peak has been offering a great opportunity to many trekkers and climbers to evaluate their strength at 6000+ altitude and get acquainted with high-altitude mountaineering.

In addition, our 14-day Everest base Camp trek with Lobuche East peak climbing trip also allows you to see the colorful Everest Base Camp, conquer the black summit of Kala Patthar, and immerse yourself in the warm hospitality of the Sherpa Villages.

From start to finish, the amazing mountain vistas will captivate you on the trip while discovering the rare wildlife and plant species of Everest National Park.

In terms of difficulty, the trekking expedition to the Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar is relatively straightforward, yet ascending the Lobuche East Peak is considerably challenging and requires basic technical skills. This expedition is therefore suitable for individuals who are physically fit, able to walk for long hours, and free from severe chronic ailments.

The primary obstacles encountered during climbing are altitude, the need to pass the open and closed glacial cracks, coping with low temperatures, and dealing with harsh weather conditions.

All these challenges therefore make our 14-day Everest Base Camp trek with Lobuche East Peak climbing expedition useful for those seeking to push their physical limits to prepare themselves for ascending the summits of Dhaulagiri, Ama Dablam, Makalu, Manalsu, or Everest in the future.

If you are prepared to face all these obstacles and want to be a fearless adventurer, then we invite you to join our Everest Base Camp trek with Lobuche East peak climbing trip today.

Trip Information - Good to Know

Best Time

The mountain weather is unpredictable but we usually have the best weather in the Khumbu region in the autumn period from September to November when the air becomes crisper, the Lobuche Peak and Everest Base Camp get dusted with fine snow with the mild day temperature of 20° C.

This is also the high season for trekking and climbing adventures in Nepal as the months offer the best weather condition that guarantees a successful push to the summit.

The second best and high season for Everest base Camp trek with Lobuche East peak climbing is spring from March to May when the daytime temperature rises to 25° C. After bypassing the winter cold, nature awakens and the trail in the Khumbu is filled with scents and unique colors.

We won’t suggest the winter months of December, January, and February, as well as the summer months of June to August to climb Lobuche Peak. Although it is a 6000 m trekking peak, it still is a Himalaya known for its unstable weather. The hazard can be many times higher during winter and summer.

Elevation and Distance

The majestic Lobuche East Peak at an impressive altitude of 6119 m is perched 150 km away from the pulsating Kathmandu city. From the Everest Base Camp, we will need to cover a distance of 8.5 km and from Lukla, we will have to walk for 31 km.

The town of Lukla situated 135 km from Kathmandu serves as the starting point for our Everest Base Camp with the Lobuche East peak climbing adventure. As we make our way towards Lobuche Peak, we will also take a detour to visit the renowned Everest Base Camp, nestled at an altitude of 5364m and located 200 to 300 km away from the capital.

Additionally, we will have the opportunity to explore the magnificent Kala Patthar, standing tall at 5,548m. Our highest overnight stop will be at Lobuche High Camp, situated at an elevation of 5,200m.

Maximum/Minimum walk per day

Our 14-day Everest Base Camp with Lobuche East peak climbing expedition includes 13 hiking days when we will conquer a distance of 15 km each day, spending around 5 to 6 hours on our feet. As we trek through the breathtaking landscapes, we will encounter a few challenging days that require us to walk for 6 to 7 hours.

However, day 11 will be the ultimate challenge when we climb Lobuche Peak from High Camp and then trek to Pheriche, a journey lasting 9 to 10 hours. On the other hand, the first day will be an easy and short walk with just a three-hour trek from Lukla to Phakding.

Difficulty and Acclimatization

Lobuche East Peak demands basic technical climbing skills due to its PD+ grade for which our highly experienced climbing guide will provide you with comprehensive training in essential techniques. Such as knot tying and the use of ice axes, jumars, carabiners, harnesses, and ropes.

On the other hand, the Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar trek is a moderately challenging adventure that doesn’t require any technical expertise.

Therefore, the Everest Base Camp trek with Lobuche East peak climbing is suitable for everyone regardless of their technical skills, or prior experience in high altitude trekking or climbing.

Additionally, we always have a quieter hike or rest day after a tougher day. We will take a break in Namche and Dingboche, and explore Everest View Hotel and Nagarjun Hill. We also have shortened our walks as we near the Lobuche summit, ensuring our bodies are ready to conquer it comfortably.

Can a beginner join this trek?

Our Everest Base Camp with Lobuche East peak climbing trip is suitable for an ordinary person with average health and fitness. We have led many successful expeditions with participants of different ages, from teenagers to 70-year-old pensioners.

The trek involves 4-6 hours of hiking each day, with porters to carry your belongings. All you have to do is appreciate the majestic Himalayan mountains and capture the beauty through photographs. However you have to be prepared to walk a few hours daily for 13 days, so ensure you are physically and mentally fit for this adventure.

Preparation and training

You don’t have to be an experienced trekker or climber to be part of this adventure. Just make sure to train and physically prepare at least a month or two before departing for our Everest base camp and Lobuche East Peak climbing trip.

You can begin by incorporating running, walking, swimming, or cycling into your routine to improve your strength and stamina. Then, you can go outdoors with a light backpack and take a walk, especially on hilly terrain to strengthen the right muscles.

Since climbing to Lobuche Peak requires some skill of walking on crampons and hiking poles, you can include them when trekking uphill. Please remember to avoid excessive exercise and stick to a moderate intensity, limiting it to three sessions per week.

Alternate Routes

If you have previous experience with high-altitude trekking and climbing, or if you have successfully climbed Lobuche East Peak and are now seeking a more technical challenge, you may consider climbing Lobuche West Peak, which stands at an elevation of 6145 meters.

The ascent to this peak is known to be more technically demanding than the East peak, requiring advanced mountaineering skills. It involves passing the sharp vertical slopes covered with snow, and some exposed ridges before reaching the summit. However, the West Peak offers equally stunning panoramic views as those from Lobuche East.

Following a similar route we have taken during the Lobuche East Peak, you will trek to Lobuche West Peak Base Camp and High Camp, located at 5850 meters, after reaching Kala Patthar then assault the summit.

Altitude Sickness

We will be at a high altitude immediately from day 1 when we travel from the flat Kathmandu Valley to the high Lukla town. The altitude then goes on increasing as we move further on our hiking trail. Therefore, the high altitude will obviously affect us.

We have a good acclimatization plan in between the hiking days and will advance upwards at a reasonable pace so that you can feel well enough when reaching the top of Lobuche summit. Still, you may experience headache, nausea, difficulty sleeping, and loss of appetite at altitude above 4000 m.

Our guide will be responsive and he will check your pulse and oxygen level daily to know if you are well acclimatized. Walking steadily and not exerting too much pressure on yourself is important, as well as drinking plenty of water and eating regularly to help your body to adapt to thin air of Khumbu.

Our team carries the first aid box with Diamox for emergencies. After observing your condition, our guide may give you Diamox, please inform us if you have any allergies. Generally, the condition improves within a few hours, if not, our guide may take you to a lower altitude until your health improves.

Transportation, Accommodation, Food and Drink

After you book the trip with us, we will think about everything to the smallest detail so all you have to do is arrive. We will take care of your airport transfers to and from your hotel in Kathmandu. We will also manage your Kathmandu-Lukla-Kathmandu flight. If we need to fly from Ramechhap, we will arrange a 4-hour private transport to the Ramechhap airport.

Your accommodation in Kathmandu will be at a 3-star hotel in the tourist area. While trekking, you will stay in charming mountain lodges, made of stone or wood, with double rooms.

Breakfast is included at the hotel in Kathmandu, and in the lodges, you will have breakfast, lunch, and dinner along with tea or coffee and seasonal fruit after dinner.

When camping, our kitchen team will take care of setting up the tents and preparing your meals. Nepali cuisine resembles Indian food, featuring plenty of rice, noodles, and a mild level of spiciness.

Communication, Gadgets charging, and Internet/WIFI

In Kathmandu, Lukla, or Namche, you have the option to purchase a local SIM card from NTC or NCELL. We recommend choosing NCELL for better coverage, even while trekking. Both NTC and NCELL offer 4G internet data packages.

While staying in lodges, you can access decent wifi. Everest Link prepaid cards are available for network access, but keep in mind that the connection may be weaker during bad weather conditions.

Charging facilities for your mobile phone and camera are available in lodges but at an extra cost.

Permits

The permits needed for Everest Base Camp with the Lobuche East peak climbing trip are the Khumbu Rural Municipality Permit, Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit, and Lobuche East Peak Climbing Permit. Our guide will take care of obtaining the climbing permit for you in Kathmandu, while the remaining permits can be obtained in Lukla.
