Kathmandu and Lumbini are among the top 5 cities in Nepal while Kathmandu is also the capital city of Nepal. King Gun Kamdev constructed his capital of Kathmandu back in the 7th century. As per the legends, Manjushree slash opened up the southern hill of the valley to let the lake’s water drain completely, turning Kathmandu from a body of water to a livable place. This Kathmandu and Lumbini Tour takes you on a thorough exploration tour within both cities.
The majestic temple next to Kathmandu Royal Palace, known in Sanskrit as Kastha-Mandap, or the wood temple, is supposed to be the inspiration behind the valley’s name. Constructed in 1596 by King Laxmi Narashingha Malla, it was made from just one tree. There are a ton of shrines, sacred sites, intriguing structures, historic settlements, and lovely sights all across Kathmandu.
With its beautiful position atop a hill, the Buddhist temple of Swayambhunath ranks among the most important sites to check out. The site is located close to the tourist hub of the city, Thamel. Pashupatinath, a highly revered Hindu temple, is located close to the Tribhuvan International Airport on the eastern side of the valley.
The Buddhist temple of Bouddhanath is well worth visiting as well. On the outskirts of Kathmandu, there are a few excellent hilltop viewpoints, namely: Kakani, Nagarkot, and Dhulikhel. Nagarkot is the most visited viewpoint out of the three as it offers the best view of the three. Some noteworthy sites you might want to see are Dakshinkali, Budhanilkantha, and Changunarayan.
The ancient culture of Lumbini, combined with the idea that your feet happen to be in the exact spot where myths and traditions were created, takes visitors to another era and draws up lively and vibrant visions of the past.
Intricately designed monasteries constructed by several nationalities are proudly on display in Lumbini. They are exhibited as tributes of various countries to the teachings of Buddha. There are around fifteen or more monasteries, divided into two distinct zones, on both sides of a canal. The canal is also used for a scenic boat ride from one end to the other. Each temple has a unique design, and they compete with one another to display their aesthetics.
Both of these cities are rich in history and culture. While Kathmandu is the cultural hub for the Newari people, Lumbini serves as the global hub of Buddhism. Devotees from all around the world and all over the nation come to visit this place at least once in their lifetime. This Kathmandu and Lumbini Tour is designed to let you enjoy all the offerings that each of these cities put out.
The Kathmandu and Lumbini Tour starts at Kathmandu; the first day consists of arriving at Kathmandu. You will not be traveling on the first day of the tour as flights can be a bit taxing on your body, we want you to be fully energetic during the tour up ahead. On the 2nd day, you will go on a day sightseeing tour in and around the Kathmandu valley.
For your Kathmandu sightseeing tour, we have a set list of sites to visit which you can choose from. If you are not content with our standard offering, you can swap places and add sites you would like to visit. After a day full of traveling and visiting different sites, we will spend the night in Kathmandu before heading to Bhairahawa the next day.
The flight to Bhairahawa is just around 35 minutes long but you will not visit Lumbini on the same day, instead, you will rest for the day. The next day of the Kathmandu and Lumbini Tour, you will visit the sacred grounds of Lumbini for a fully guided tour visiting the remnants of the birthplace of Buddha.
The Kathmandu and Lumbini Tour can really be done all year round and since we will be traveling by flight instead of long road trips, you do not have to worry about landslides and floods blocking the roadways during the monsoon season. However, you will get the best views during the seasons of Spring and Autumn, as they offer clear skies with little chance of rainfall.
Traveling in the summer season can be a bit too hot as the Terai region is the tropical region of Nepal, you will not feel very mild in Kathmandu but once you step into the Terai region, you will definitely feel the heat. This Kathmandu and Lumbini Tour is also doable in winter but it gets cloudy most of the time making the trip gloomy.
You will be staying at a three-star hotel in Kathmandu while your accommodation will be at a 4-star hotel in Lumbini. As for meals and drinks, we will provide you with breakfast every morning while the rest of the meals are your extra expenses, to be paid out of your own pocket. While in Kathmandu, you should try the traditional Newrai dishes along with some Tibetan dishes. You will find many Tibetan restaurants around the monasteries.
While in Lumbini, you should definitely try their local specialty and local drinks. Having the local food is a major part of the experience of visiting different parts of Nepal.
All land transportation required by the tour itinerary will be covered by our Kathmandu and Lumbini Tour package along with pick up from airport on day 1 and drop off on day 5. Beside that, you will also travel from Kathmandu to Bhairawa via a flight which is also covered by the tour package.
From Kathmandu, we can first go to Pokhara or Bandipur for natural scenic treat before heading to Lumbini. If you choose to go to Pokhara, the flight to Pokhara only lasts 25 minutes but you will likely spend a night there to enjoy all the offering of Pokhara. If you want to visit Bandipur instead, you will have to travel there by bus or jeep which take around 6 to 7 hours of road trip.
Bandipur is a lovely little town sitting atop a hill. The main attraction of the town is the ancient Newari style buildings and the stunning sunrise scene from the nearby hilltop viewpoint. Adding destinations to the Kathmandu and Lumbini Tour increases the number of days and cost accordingly.
Alternatively, you can visit the tropical jungle and National Park of Chitwan before visiting Lumbini. The Chitwan National Park is arguably the best attraction of the Terai region of Nepal. This tropical land offers a bunch of different adventure activities including kayaking, jungle safari (elephant rides, walk, or jeep safari), elephant bathing, tower night stay, canoeing, and more.
Our Kathmandu and Lumbini Tour pacakge covers all your transportation costs, accommodation, sightseeing ticket fees, local taxes, and more. Keeping that in mind, we have priced this package at USD ________. We recommend you to carry some cash to pay for you extra expenses.
Your extra expenses include lunch and dinner during the Kathmandu and Lumbini Tour, international flight expenses, visa fees upon arrival at airport, tips for the drivers and guides, any kind of beverages, and anything not mentioned as a part of the package.
Besides packing your clothes according to the season you are traveling in, you should have a couple of masks as it can get a bit dusty in Kathmandu. You will also need sunscreen, sunhat, shades, and light wear in general (expcept for winter season).
From Kathmandu, we will first land at the airport in Bhairahawa following a 35 minutes. From Bhairahawa, Lumbini is about 20 kms which takes around an hour of road trip. So, in total, you will travel about 1.5 hours or 2 hours depending on the traffic flow. Our Kathmandu and Lumbini Tour takes yout to Bhairawa via flight but, if you opt for a road travel instead, the total travel time adds upto 11 hours.
Yes, one whole day is enough for Lumbini, you will get to visit all the sites within the sacred grounds of Lumbini and also have some time to sit around and take in the offerings of the Kathmandu and Lumbini Tour.
You can do this Kathmandu and Lumbini Tour all year round but there are preferable seasons and some not-so-preferable ones. Winter and summer is considered slightly unfavorable compared to spring and autumn season.
