Let us take you on a journey that will allow you to discover the captivating nature of the Langtang region. We introduce you to our ten-day Tamang Heritage trek- an opportunity to venture through the incredibly bewitching culture and tradition of the Tamang villages that adds fantastic context to your sightseeing adventures. We promise you that this trek has a unique blend of nature, culture, customs, landscapes, and mountains.
The Tamang Heritage trek trail is nestled between Ganesh Himal and Langtang Mountain about 30 km away north of Kathmandu. The ten-day long walking tour will take you through the restricted zone of Langtang National Park. The trek was only open to international visitors since 2004. Today, the Tamang Heritage Trek offers unique tourism prospects.
This trekking journey will take you to remote mountain villages such as Gatlang, Thuman, Nagthali Danda, and Briddim. These vibrant communities are set in breathtaking mountain scenery and have remained largely unknown to too many tourists.
The people living in these traditional villages around the valley mainly belong to the Tamang ethnic groups. Descendants of ancient Tibetan traders, these people love to breathe in high-altitude air and dwell in high mountain villages.
Despite living in the 21st century, their way of life has remained unspoiled by technology. Their daily routine involves cattle breeding, agriculture, and trading with China via Kerung. They also craft bamboo baskets and mats as part of their everyday life. They follow their own cultural heritage, they proudly wear their ethnic attire, and speak their own language. Thus the Tamang heritage trek will give you the opportunity to learn about the unique languages and customs of these ancient cultures.
On the other hand, for nature lovers, the Tamang Heritage trek is not inferior to other trekking routes with landscapes of green terraced fields or snow-capped mountain peaks including the grandest spectacle of Langtang Lirung, Langtang Kerung, Ganesh Himal, and more Langtang Himalayan ranges. Along with the unique chance to spot red pandas, musk deer, snow leopards, and langurs of the protected Langtang National Park.
Thus, it is a great destination for trekkers who want to experience a cultural journey in the Nepalese Himalayas and enjoy the diverse natural landscape and climate that varies with altitude.
From the captivating land of Kathmandu, we will begin our journey to the Tamang Heritage trek with a drive to the small settlement of Syabrubesi in Rasuwa district. On the following day, we start our march towards the authentic Tamang villages of Gatlang, and Tatopani.
We will then climb Nagthali Danda and make our way to Thuman, Briddim back to Syabrubesi from where we will drive back to Kathmandu thus ending our remarkable cultural journey of ten days.
The autumn months of September, October, and November are the best time for our Tamang Heritage trek. The monsoon rain has cleared the skies of dust and the views are often spectacular. The valleys are still green and the weather is mild, so trekking is much more pleasant at this time of year.
The spring season of March, April, and May is the second best time for the Tamang Heritage trek. Temperatures range from 25 degrees to 6 degrees. Visibility on the trails can still be hazy but is counteracted by the blooming rhododendrons and other plants in the lush forests. The trails are fresh, bright, and inviting with the new leaves and buds of the spring season. The days are warm, while the mornings and nights can be cool.
The winter months from December to February are also favorable as the days will be warm but the mornings and nights will be very chilly. However, the views will be clear with bright sunny days. Please be aware that Nagthali Danda is often covered in snow during winter.
We do not recommend the summer/Monsoon months of June, July, and August for the trip as the temperatures range from a minimum of 20 to a maximum of 30 degrees Celsius. Trekking during this season requires rain gear to counter the heavy downpours and slippery slopes.
The Tamang Heritage trek is 53 km long and takes you to the northern side of Kathmandu city. The starting village for this trek is Syabrubesi lying 122 km away from the capital. The distance can be covered within 6 to 7 hours of drive along the Pasang Lhamu Highway.
The highest altitude we will gain in our 10-day journey is at Nagthali Danda erected at 3165 m above sea level. Our highest overnight destination will be the village of Tatopani elevated at 2607 m above sea level. Along the ten-day duration, we will hike only for five days covering approximately 10 km each day.
The five days allocated for a hiking adventure in our ten-day itinerary of the Tamang Heritage trek need us to walk for approximately 5 to 6 hours each day. However, the difficulty level during the trek mainly depends on the terrain and the overnight destination we have assigned on our itinerary. The easiest and most picturesque walking day will be on day 5 when we trek from Gatlang to Tatopani hiking for 5 to 6 hours.
The most strenuous day will fall on the sixth day as we trek from Tatopani to reach the Tamang Village of Thuman. On this day, we will climb the Nagthali Danda and reach the highest point of our trek walking for 7 hours.
Our Tamang Heritage trek represents a relatively gentle hike especially compared to some of the higher altitude treks in Nepal. Most treks remain below 3,000 meters, which makes this journey especially attractive for those new to the Himalayas. Therefore, it is a comfortable journey perfectly suitable for newcomers, beginners, families with kids and senior citizens, and individuals regardless of age and fitness level.
The entire trek is a wonderful cultural and sightseeing journey that offers you a glimpse into the rich heritage culture of the Tamang ethnic tribe.
However, you must be prepared for the long hiking hours for five days when you have to walk along the often steep and rocky mountainous terrain for 5 to 6 hours a day. The most arduous challenge will be ascending and descending from the Nagthali Danda which stands at the elevation of more than 3000 m.
For those who are unaccustomed to long day hikes and steep ascent and descent, this can be a challenge that can be tackled with proper preparation and training before the trek.
To make this trip favorable for everyone, we have designed this itinerary with an integration of gradual climbs and minimal walks as much as possible.
Additionally, our local knowledgeable guide will accompany you and will ensure you experience a safe and memorable journey throughout.
The Tamang Heritage trek is a relatively low-altitude trek where the highest elevation of our resting village of Tatopani will be around 2600 m. The crossing of approximately 3100 m high Nagthali Danda will be our challenge along the route. So the trek doesn’t involve any high mountain pass or very high altitude trekking. So if you already are an active person who believes in retaining fitness, this trek will be an easy journey for you.
However, those who spend long hours behind the desk should prepare physically for the trip at least a month before the departing date. You can engage in a simple half an hour of walking, jogging, cycling, running, and swimming to improve your endurance.
To prepare for the steep ascent and descent, you can skip the elevator and instead try climbing stairs up and down multiple times a day.
Please note that the Tamang heritage trekking trail is relatively a pristine route and the Tamangs like to preserve their traditional way of life. Along the route, you may have to stay in their home interacting with them and satisfying with what is available. So be willing to sacrifice some comfort for a few days and the reward will be the beautiful mountain views along with the unique Tamang culture.
Are you intrigued by the short Tamang Heritage trek? Then why not add four more days to your trip and enhance your trekking experience with a trip to the Langtang region? The additional days will give you insight into the authentic beauty and the unspoiled nature of the Langtang Valley with the incredible mountain views of Langtang Lirung, Dorje Lakpa, Gangchhempo, and many more.
After exploring the Tamang Villages, you will trek from Briddim to Lama Hotel, and join the trail that will lead you to Langtang Village and Kyangjin Gompa.
If you wish to experience some more adrenaline on your trip, then you can integrate the Gosaikunda Lake trek as well. You just have to add six more days to your ten-day Tamang Heritage trek to explore the pristine environment of Gosaikunda Lake.
After completing the Tamang villages exploration, your path from Thuman will connect you to Thulo Sebrubesi, Singomba to Gosainkunda. With a day at Gosaikunda, you can climb the 5100 m high Surya Peak and while returning, you will overcome the 4610 m high Lauribinayak Pass. Then taking a new route, you will return to Kathmandu via Melamchigaon.
Unlike the classic trek in Nepal, the altitude is not a factor in our Tamang Heritage trek. Still, you will be spending the night at elevations of more than 2500 m and you will be transitioning from the low plain of Kathmandu to the mountainous area of Nepal which certainly has less oxygen in the air.
So occurrence of milder symptoms of altitude sickness cannot be disregarded. Headache, dizziness, low appetite, fatigue, and nausea are some of the symptoms our participants have felt. Diamox a diuretic medicine has often helped in such cases where they felt quick relief from these symptoms.
Please let us take care of all the formalities and the logistic details regarding your trip to Nepal. As a reputed travel and tour agency in Kathmandu, we are committed to providing you with a worry-free journey and provide you absolute satisfaction. For this purpose, we have included almost all the services of transportation, accommodation, meals, and permits.
We offer airport-to-hotel and hotel-to-airport transfer via private transport during your arrival and departure day respectively. As the trip begins, we will drive you on a comfortable bus from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi and vice versa.
In Kathmandu, we will accommodate you in a standard hotel twin-sharing room for three nights with a complimentary breakfast served each morning. During the trek, your accommodation will be the tea house or lodge or homestays along the route where you can enjoy breakfast, lunch, and dinner with fresh fruit after dinner.
While the food options may not be as diverse as in other trekking journeys, you will still enjoy some traditional Tibetan cuisines like Thukpa, Momo, and Tsampa Porridge, paired with Chhyang or raksi.
You can stay connected with your loved ones throughout the Tamang heritage trek with the reliable connections of NTC or NCELL. The SIM cards can be purchased in Kathmandu by submitting your passport copy and photograph. These local networks also offer 4G service for the high internet connection. Please note that the signals of mobile networks may diminish at Nagathali Danda.
The tea houses along the route also provide WIFI at minimal cost. Please do not expect the connection to be as high and continuous as in Kathmandu.
Additionally, you can also charge your gadgets at the lodge at an extra cost as the villages now enjoy a 24-hour supply of electricity.
The restricted zone of the Langtang region needs the special Langtang National Park permit along with Trekker’s Information Management System (TIMS) permit. We will obtain these permits for you when you book your trip with us.
The newly opened Tamang Heritage Trek still is a virgin to Western tourism and lacks the basic infrastructure. In addition, it is less publicized and therefore still unknown to more tourists.
No, we suggest you withdraw money when in Kathmandu as there will be no ATMS along the route.
Yes, although the altitude is relatively low, you will still traverse to an altitude of more than 3000 m when climbing Nagthali Danda. You will be walking long hours along the rocky terrain where there are only basic amenities with a lack of advanced healthcare settings. Therefore, we suggest you buy insurance that covers an altitude of more than 3000 m and bear your financial burden in case of medical urgencies, luggage loss, and extra days’ accommodation.
Yes, although you will not go far from the main city of Kathmandu, it will take you to the remote setting along the less-frequented trail. The paths are not marked and there is the probability of getting lost.
Pack lightly as this is a short trek. Carry only necessary items such as T-shirts, hiking shoes, batteries, mobile, camera, sleeping bag, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
